Too Much Crazy

Well, the short story is this: I quit my “great” job in finance to pursue my real passion of teaching yoga. I’d always done so “on the side” for the past 8 years, and I just decided that enough was enough! Make the jump now or never. I’m one month in and feel like I’m dancing on clouds every day.

I’ll still be blogging (I’m coming back, I swear!) but pretty pretty please follow me on Facebook (this is where the party’s at!) since that’s where the good stuff has been going lately! πŸ™‚

I’ll be back later this week, y’all!

Tidbits

Couldn’t wait to get home from work and pop open a cold one
I also found this picture (which I took) and remember making and eating them but cannot find the recipe for the life of me!! How sad is that?! I know it was a simple cheesecake recipe on top of a graham cracker crust with crumbled chocolate chip cookie dough dropped on top. If anyone wants to visually deconstruct this monstrosity and tell me how to recreate it, I’d be super grateful πŸ˜‰
I got these Smarty Pants vitamins in the mail and find them delicious!! They’re gummies (for adults, DON’T JUDGE ME!) and taste almost exactly like those old-school Flinstone vitamins you probably ate as a kid. They have everything you need plus all the omegas… not a bad supplement, especially when it tastes like candy.
I’ll leave you with one last thing… I love this!

Peaches & Beaches

What a perfect day for going to the beach!! I actually wanted to rent a kayak or paddleboard to do some exploring, but once Adrien and I ran into a SHARK while swimming, we were pretty much adventured out. It was a baby shark that had no interest in us, but still!!
We probably talked about how awesome it is to have this basically in our back yard the entire drive home. The older I get the more I appreciate living in Florida, despite it’s terribly scorching hot summers.
The only inconvenient thing about the beach is the absolutely STUPID amount of sand that you will inevitably bring home with you. It’s in your shoes, the cooler you brought from home (also, in the sandwich you brought from home… somehow!), your bathing suit and every crevice on your body, of course it’s all over the car, and you may never be able to fully shake out your beach bag. Like, ever again. But it’s totally worth it. πŸ™‚

Speaking of beach food, here’s what I packed:
4 hard boiled eggs
100 calorie packs of cinnamon roasted almonds (no sugar!)
a nectarine
a banana
a green bar for him, and a hungry barΒ (you’ve gotta try these – amazing!) for her
Plus a giant container of water

Perfect amount for a few hours in the sun and sand.
Back at the casa, we’ve finished dinner and now I’m chowing down on a childhood dessert — orange sherbet with chocolate chips! Only tonight, it’s the more refined version of real fruit mango sorbet by Ciao Bella with, well… chocolate chips. πŸ™‚ I mostly got the sorbet because what reasonable person eats chocolate chips right out of the bag? Not I!

And in case we don’t eat or talk enough about food in this house, it’s teatime. So goodnight! πŸ™‚

The Best Thing

Just before I run out the door for a little gym time, here was breakfast! Stovetop banana oats with cinnamon and vanilla extract. Don’t they look extra puffy and fluffy today? Because they were! It was almost like they had marshmallow fluff inside… much to my disappointment, they did not πŸ˜‰

What you need:
1/4 c rolled oats
1/4 c milk
1/4 c water
1 banana, sliced
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
tiny dash of cinnamon

Combine oats and liquid and cook over medium low heat until it bubbles. Mix vigorously until it thickens. Add extras once it’s off the stovetop.
Dinner was more vegetables with feta and hummus. No fluff over here, but lots of savory awesomeness. These totally hit the spot!
But before I ate that for the 3rd time this week (it’s my new favorite meal!), I snacked on the ripest, sweetest, juiciest nectarine I’ve ever had. No joke! I was aiming for a healthy snack, but ate it so fast I think it was gone in a single inhale. Deee-lish — I have three more I’m tempted to eat today!
What’s the best thing about today? You know, besides the fact that it’s Saturday. πŸ˜‰

Yoga for the SI joint and happy hips!

This is more just a series of poses/stretches that you can use to relieve tension in your lower back and hips, not as much of a full-on Flow.

There were plenty of outtakes for this little photoshoot:
Screaming in A’s face while he tries to take my picture…
Why does this hair always look like it needs to be brushed? It’s the law of Erin. And again with the yelling!

But enough with that child’s play, right?! πŸ™‚ The pics here are just kind of… ehh. So when I do the MindBodyGreen version, there will be some better illustrations. In the meantime, let’s do this! Keep in the mind that for each stretch you’ll want to try to hold for about a minute. Here we go!

Pigeon. Keep in mind you’ll want to repeat on both sides, but start in Down Dog and…

– Bring your right knee through to meet your hands. So your front knee is slightly bent and the foot is flexed.
– Ideally your hips are square, facing in front of you.
Β Bound Angle. Well, this one ended up being a semi-outtake, but the focus here is my legs!
– Soles of feet together, knees dropping towards the floor, and pelvis tilting forward. You should feel a deep stretch through the hip flexors and hamstrings. If you’re extra tight, you’ll even feel a gentle pull down the lower back into the glutes.
– Be sure to sit up tall so the shoulders stack over the hips.Half Happy Baby. Usually this is NOT a good thing, but in for our purposes, it’s glorious! πŸ˜‰– Reach for the sole of one foot and bend the knee so it comes up right beneath your armpit, and it should settle right next to the ribs. The opposite leg does NOT have to be straight – you can keep the knee bent with the foot on the floor to take off some of the intensity.

Cat. Normally you’d do this as a cat/cow sequence and you absolutely still can. But, since the “cow” version flexes the back muscles and the “cat” part stretches, I figured to only show you this one.

– Line hips over knees and shoulders over wrists
– Squeeze naval to spine and press palms firmly to the ground
– Round out upper back to you arch like a sassy kitty πŸ˜‰ (Yes, I just said that!)

*This one also takes the strain out of the lumbar spine by drawing the tailbone down longer, so you’ll feel a great release there, too
Forward Fold. Simple enough, but really puts space between the vertebrae to strrrretch ’em out and lengthen all the muscles of the trunk.

– Bend the knees enough so you can rest the chest on the thighs
– Let the arms hang heavy but keep drawing the shoulders away from the ears (this is important because it keeps the neck long, so the spine runs straight and lax from the tail to the base of the neck. Otherwise you’ll end up letting the shoulders slump forward which compresses the neck.)

Β Enjoy!!!

Gun Show

Have you worked out your arms today? We did! Sometimes life gives you lemons and other times it gives you biceps:

1. Scrub your kitchen floor like you’re mad at it. (I don’t know about you, but just seeing that the mop is waiting for me makes me scowl.)
I think I hear the Jaws music…

2. Go upsidedown.
3. Make a pizza! See, I’m not even asking you to eat the pizza. The “work” here is rolling out the dough. Give it 5 minutes, you’ll see what I’m talkin’ about! πŸ˜‰
4. And lastly, finish up with a couple hours of canoeing upstream and really get your shoulders burning!

This was right after we saw a HUGE dolphin swim and splash around about 20 feet away! I was obviously pretty excited…

Β My upper body feels tight this afternoon! After we got home from our canoeing adventure, I made a smoothie that tasted like summer:

2 cups frozen peaches (or fresh, whichever is on hand)
2 small bananas
splash of hemp milk to thin it out (or milk of choice)
2 scoops vanilla protein powder
1/2 an avocado (for texture – you won’t taste it, but it makes it nice and smooth)
Pour into glass and sprinkle with cacao nibs.

Hope your Sunday was bright and sunshiney!

Heirlooms

There were too many pretty things in the produce section this afternoon, and I couldn’t decide what to pick. So I ended up with two variations of Izze! Lemon and Green Apple. Soo refreshing! I thought I had to pop the top off with one of those beer top openers, and felt super cool since I’ve actually never used one (!). Crazy, I know! But I don’t drink beer and no one close to me does either. But all that information was useless, because turns out, it was a twist top. Oops.
We had an awesome tomato salad with the heirloom tomatoes Whole Foods had on sale. Dice them up and mix in a bowl with 1/8 c olive oil, 4 T balsamic vinegar, 8-10 leaves chopped fresh basil, 1 clove chopped garlic, salt & pepper.

Washed & ready!
Dive into bowl.
And after all that nutrition and all my yoga this weekend, a good treat was in order. After my yoga workshop there was a snack tray full or oranges, grapes, berries and then a lonely container full of brownies. Guess which one I reached for? πŸ˜‰ I’ll give you one guess. It’s in the same family of what was for dessert tonight.
Boom.Β Worth every calorie… although it’s not like I’m ever counting.

Speaking of yoga…
I met with my yogi soulmate, Kathryn Budig. We did some sweet inversions, arm balances, and a glorious Flow which was much needed. Plus, I came away with a sweet twist variation to bring to class on Tuesday!
Enjoy your weekend!
